How to travel withoutsupporting gentrification
You cannot erase every impact. You can stay with people who already live there, spend on the street they use, and leave the tourist apartments alone.
Short-term rentals and heavy tourist spending push rents up. Homes become listings. Shops start serving visitors instead of neighbors. People who made the neighborhood feel like home get priced out.
That hits queer streets especially hard. The bar, the cheap flat, the community center: those are the same things travelers come to find, and the first things to go when the area becomes a weekend destination.
Stay in someone's home
A spare room or a couch keeps the night with a person who already lives there. A building full of empty tourist flats does the opposite. If the whole block looks like a hotel of entire-place listings, it is probably pulling housing off the long-term market.
Spend where locals spend
Eat at the café they actually use. Shop at independent and queer-owned places. Walk, bike or take the bus when it is safe. Ask your host: where do you go on a normal weekend?
Skip the rental hotspot
You can still visit a popular city. Stay a bit further out, in a mixed residential area, and come in. You do not have to sleep in the most touristed streets.
Show up for the spaces that last all year
Community centers, bookstores, local bars, benefit nights. The big international party is fun. The place residents use in February is the one that gets priced out first.
Be a decent neighbor
Keep the noise down at night. Follow the house rules. Treat stairs, courtyards and parks like you live there too. That is how a building stays willing to host.
